Ugley:

Secret tunnel

An underground passage, so the tales tell, runs from Ugley Hall (TL52012865) to Rickling Hall (TL49913019), more than a mile to the north-west.

Pharisee's Hole

On a direct line between the two halls mentioned above there used to be a depression in the ground known as Pharisee's Hole. Close to Broom Wood and the B1383 road (c.TL512291 area), in the late 19th century a carriage-driver claimed to have seen a number of naked children dancing there one night. Some have connected this with a fairy gathering, since Pharisees or Farrisees is an old East Anglian term for fairies.
