SHUCKLAND          Introduction        Alphabetical List of Locations
Location: Henstead area, SUFFOLK
Legend: "I well remember some fifty years ago after my pals and I had been camping on Benacre Denes (we lived at Scole in those days) we cycled home just before dark and always spoke of getting well on the way before dark in case we encountered Black Shuck - the lanes (as they were then) between Henstead and Hulver were a particular source of concern and we were always pleased after we had safely passed those two villages."

Location: Henstead area, SUFFOLK
Encounter: On August 5th 1973, a man and his friend were about to drive from Henstead south to Bawdsey to canoe off the coast. As they rounded a corner of the road, still near Henstead, they saw a "huge black dog" with "something like a mane" standing in the road, apparently looking at them. The man said that it "seemed to be there and was just gone", and open getting out there was no trace of it, even though there were open fields all around.

The man became convinced it was Shuck because shortly after, although both experienced canoeists, their boat capsized and they were nearly drowned. He connected the experience with tales of Shuck being an ill-omen.
