Legend: "According to some notes on the subject appearing 'Folk-Lore' [June 1952], a similar apparition [to the Mistley white dog] is associated with the country places on the fringe of Chelmsford".(1)

"Dogs are seen at fixed places [in the Chelmsford area], usually bridges, and are considered to be a death warning. A local saying tells of someone who is dying, “the Black Dog is at his heel".(2)
